Welcome back. I'm busy doing my homeschool planning for next year but I'll be here occasionally keeping you updated. You may find just what you came for and if you don't, then keep checking back!
We use a four year rotation of history and science which has given us a good spine for creating unit studies. It has actually given me the freedom to be creative within a plan. I like to know the big picture, and if I were blindly picking unit study topics out of thin air I think I would always wonder what I might be skipping.
I use many different types of resources for putting unit studies together to fit our needs. These links are some of my recommendations for unit study resources. If you aren’t sure what a unit study is then click on the first link for an explanation of the unit study approach.
- What is a unit study? – In a unit study you take one topic and study it in depth, exploring all aspects of it across the curriculum.
- Designing your own unit study - This is follow up to the article that was written above. If you have wanted to put a unit study together but don’t know how then this is a must-read.
- Beautiful Feet History of the Horse - This is a Christian living books based program. It uses Marguerite Henry’s horse novels, along with other great resources to have for your horse lovers.
- Evan-Moor Maps - This is a great resource with 92 maps covering the entire world. This could be used with any study of history.
- Five in a Row - This is one of my all time favorite homeschool resources. I have used FIAR with all of my children and I treasure the books that I get to read with them over and over again.
- Lyrical Learning - These are CD’s that have tons of scientific information set to song. The music is catchy and the lyrics sneak in all the scientific information that can go along with any science topic.
- Notebooking Pages - These pages can be printed and used with many different topics. This web site really comes in handy.
- Apologia Elementary Science – These Christian based text books are great spines for science unit studies. The lessons are easily customizable to use within a semester or spread them out over a whole year.

What great resources! I’ve homeschooled for 8 years and I’ve never put together my own in depth unit study, just little things here and there.
