Welcome back. I'm busy doing my homeschool planning for next year but I'll be here occasionally keeping you updated. You may find just what you came for and if you don't, then keep checking back!

For our third Homeschool History Buffs, I thought we’d try a blog hop.  A blog hop is neat because each person participating can copy the code from McLinky (below) and paste it into their blog post.  All the blogs that are participating will appear in the box.  This makes it easier to hop from blog to blog!  If you have a history related post that you would like to share this week, try joining the blog hop.

Pomander Balls

For over a century, spicy pomander balls have been used to decorate houses and have been hung in closets to repel moths. Traditional ones are clove studded fruit that have been rolled in a spice mixture and dried. While oranges are most commonly used, lemons, limes, apples or hard pears can also be used.

Materials needed:

  • fruit such as oranges or apples
  • skewer
  • string
  • decorative ribbon
  • whole cloves

Directions:

  1. Poke holes in your fruit in rows, with the skewer, so that the cloves are easier to push in and they are nicely spaced out.
  2. In each hole, place a whole clove.
  3. Tie the stem with a piece of string and let the fruit air dry for several weeks.
  4. After the fruit is dry, and dark brown, then you can tie the ribbon around it and hang it up for decoration.

Too bad. We’ve been on more of a science and language arts kick lately. Nothing to show off with history. :-)
